Exacting work schedules and demanding lifestyles are taking a toll on men and women. the repercussions have started to tell on their pets, too, since they get stressed due to the long absence of their owners from home. alternative therapy is now providing the healing touch to such animals.
“today, it’s just not humans who are facing high stress levels,” says priya rajagopalan, a reiki master and a certified animal communicator from the us. “even animals get affected by the differences in energy levels around them. dogs tend to get skin allergies and dandruff if they are highly stressed,” rajagopalan, who has used reiki on many dogs, birds, fish and, on one occasion, even on an elephant in nagarhole, says. “since animals are highly receptive to energies, reiki can work marvels on them.”

she conducts reiki sessions for 15 dogs; four of them are brought to her regularly. most of them leap at her as soon they see her and frolic around the place. but, when she starts her therapy, they drift off to a restful sleep. “the more excited ones take time to come around, but the calmer ones experience relaxation almost immediately,” she explains.
the therapy gives pets the same feeling as of a mother cuddling her baby and thereby transmits a good load of positive energy in the process. “it can be done on all animals and street dogs are no exception,” she says.
the effects are amazing. pets that come out of the therapy are more calm and social and they even allow themselves to be petted by guests at home. “the fear gets extracted and they are much more social thereafter. when it comes to caged birds, you’ll see them less frenzied, and fish stop wiggling madly in their bowls after a round of reiki,” rajagopalan, who conducts reiki sessions at mother tree in indiranagar also, says.
apart from treating stress, reiki also helps to heal open wounds and other diseases, including arthritis. dogs that are frightened of thunder and lightning also learn how to take it easy with follow-up reiki sessions.
“doing reiki on pets is a common trend abroad. here, if our pet has a problem, we take it to the vet, but don’t depend on therapeutic practices like reiki for soothing its emotional needs,” says rajagopalan.
